Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation for the IB Diploma Standard Level (Print Book + eBook) is Pearson’s new textbook for IB Math AI SL, written for the IB’s 2027 Subject Guide. It is for students who begin the course in August 2027 and take their first exams in May 2029. The book was developed in cooperation with the IB by a team of experienced IB teachers and examiners led by Series Editor Ibrahim Wazir.

You’ll receive: one printed student textbook plus an eBook access code with 2 years of access.

Math for the Real World

Applications and Interpretation is the IB math course built around real-world problems. Students learn to model situations, analyse data and use technology to find and explain answers. AI SL is a popular choice for students heading toward business, psychology, social sciences, design, or any degree where data and statistics matter more than abstract algebra.

What the 2027 Update Means for AI SL

The IB has streamlined the course rather than rewritten it.

What changed Before 2027 From 2027
Logarithms Included Removed
Trapezoidal rule (approximating areas) Included Removed
New topics n/a None added
Paper 1 and Paper 2 80 marks each 75 marks each
Internal assessment criteria Separate SL criteria Shared with HL: problem specification, abstraction, computation, interpretation

The result is a slightly lighter, more focused course, with the same emphasis on modelling, statistics, and using technology to solve problems in context.

How the Book Teaches

One method for every problem. Each worked example follows the IB’s four-stage inquiry process: specify the problem, abstract it into mathematical form, compute, then interpret the result. Students apply the same process to textbook exercises, exam questions and their own Mathematical Exploration, which is now marked on these same four stages.

Students discover ideas before being told. Explorations ask students to investigate before a concept is formally taught. Investigations and Reflections then push their understanding further.

Support is built into every page:

  • Learning objectives opening each chapter, mapped to the new guide
  • Do You Recall questions to check earlier knowledge is secure
  • Key Fact and Key Term boxes for must-know results and vocabulary
  • Hint boxes with exam tips and warnings about common errors
  • Challenge tags on extension material for ambitious students
  • Exercises and practice questions, including real past IB paper questions
  • An Internal Assessment chapter to help students plan, write and refine their Exploration
  • 2-year eBook access for study at home, at school or on the go

The Authors

The series is led by Ibrahim Wazir, former IB Mathematics Chief Examiner, IB Curriculum Committee member and founder of the International Schools Math Teachers Foundation. The author team includes IB examiners, IA moderators and DP workshop leaders who teach at international schools around the world.

Choosing the Right IB Math Book

  • Math AI SL, starting 2027 or later: this is your book.
  • Math AI HL: you need the Applications and Interpretation Higher Level book.
  • Math AA (Analysis and Approaches): you need the Analysis and Approaches books. AA SL is ISBN 9781292499604.
  • Sitting exams before 2029: you’re on the previous syllabus, so use the earlier edition.

FAQs

What does “AI” stand for in IB Math AI?
Applications and Interpretation. It’s one of the two IB Diploma math courses; the other is Analysis and Approaches (AA).

Do I need a graphing calculator for AI SL?
Technology is central to the AI course, and students use it to solve problems throughout. Check your school’s calculator requirements before the course starts.

Is the eBook included?
Yes. One eBook access code with 2 years of access comes with the printed book.

Is AI SL easier than AA SL?
It’s different rather than simply easier. AI SL focuses on modelling and statistics with technology, while AA SL is more algebraic and calculus-focused. Choose based on your strengths and your intended university course.
